An impressive team from St Mary’s and Imperial Healthcare told an HPEA meeting at Abasto yesterday, 22nd November, how residents will be involved in the future of the hospital. Redevelopment Director Matt Tulley committed to continuing engagement with the local community through public meetings and other consultations. Mr Tulley said the hospital had had full support from the Department of Health and other authorities for its plans, which include an increase in bed numbers from 550 at present to 800 on a smaller but denser footprint, while remaining within the building height requirements of the Paddington Opportunity Area. He also paid tribute to local workers, volunteers and Friends of St Mary’s for their work, and thanked the HPEA for the donation raised from the summer’s Jubilee Garden Party.
The hospital was recently reawarded its “biomedical centre” status, which makes it the biggest such centre in the UK at a time when independent life sciences companies are actively seeking to invest in lab space in the vicinity. There was positive news also for the continuation of the hospital’s status as a major trauma centre and for its continued inclusion in the list of 40 new and renovated hospitals promised by the government at the last General Election.
